Energy Drinks, and Vision X Extreme lighting have Won the second toughest
race in North American Off road Racing. This year's Tecate SCORE Baja
500. This was one of the toughest Baja courses in the history of the event
and it showed. Dave Creagan said "We wanted to win this year more than
ever. We have had our fair share of 2nd and 3rd place finishes in Mexico,
we really needed this. Our Sponsors are unbelievable. Their dedication
to our program is so hard to find. Arctic Cat is dedicating so much effort
to the South West Markets and are bringing out the fastest, baddest, Quads
and UTV's anywhere and the Wired Energy guys have helped us from Jackson
Hole Wyoming to Baja Mexico. We could not ask for better people to work
with. We are blessed. They deserve this win they really do" "And to Joe
at Vision X Lighting it's going to be tough to call me a Mary now! From
last to first baby!"
This year's 500 went over what they call the summit. We remembered this part of the course from 2005 because this part of Baja had a special place for us in her heart. A special place for us to change tires, change radiators, and change directions two or three times as Jim and I lost the GPS for a while. But this year was different. We had our problems early. Dave ended up stuck in a gully about 60 miles from the start of the Summits rock infested roads. He was stuck long enough for his second place start to not only dwindle to last in Pro Truck but two other entire classes passed him. By the time they got out Chris Creagan, Dave's co- driver said "We had no choice but to push the truck way harder than we should. Twice we hit over 114 mph going down some hills that normally we would do at about 80 mph. Our plan for taking it easy on the new General Tires went right out the window. We were spinning and sliding on the solid rock going over the summit. Trust me, there is no need to take it easy on the new Grabber tires. The only flats came because Dave had me so freaked with how fast he was going through the rocks I was not watching the GPS and we took out two side walls on a cattle guard. This left us with no spare and 45 miles to the next pit. Sure enough Dave railed a boulder and we were on the rim with 25 miles to the pit at mile 207. I bet no one will believe me but we were doing 87 mph across the dry lake bed on the back right rim and we passed like a 12 class or something. I hope those guys had an in car cam it would be sweet video. I think someone at the Baja Pits got us changing the rim on film. Alcoa should be proud of their stuff I would never have believed we could rally that far on a rim in those kind of conditions. I thought the race was over for us" |
When we finally beat
the rim off the truck with sledge hammers the race was back on. Dave had
gone from last to 4th behind Voss, Reinertson, and Mango Racing. Brian
Coats and Troy Tackett would take the truck the rest of the way. Brian
past the Mango truck in the pits quickly and was trying to get past Reinertson.
They battled back and forth a couple times before Reinertson rolled four
times down the cliff at the silt hill at about race mile 360 breaking
a ball joint and spending the rest of the race looking at the desert stars
waiting for the rescue. Voss was still a ways out front so we were staring
at a second place barring any disasters and we were elated with that.
The diversity we overcame to get back into the race was accomplishment
enough. As we rolled down the hills into Ensenada the radio came alive
with the sound of Carlos our west coast chase manager. In perfect broken
English he said. Baja Dave, Baja Dave its Carlos chase 2. No Voss
Pro Truck finish Dave. You hear me No Voss Finish. He broke motor tell
Brian make truck go easy and we win!. Words cannot describe the
onslaught of mass confusion and communication that ensued at that point.
All five chase trucks and the race truck were trying to talk all at once
till Brian and Troy finally broke through and said Please shut up
were trying to finish a race here. Everyone was so excited with
the prospect of winning the 500. How awesome. Our hearts go out to the
Voss team they are great competitors and were very close when the engine
blew up. I guess thats racing.
I want thank SCORE for the awesome race this year and the people of Ensenada Mexico. You are the best fans on the planet. We will be back for the Baja 1000 and cant wait to see what type of humbling terrain the course will bring forth.
